Jordan is a fighter!
This is Jordan Griffin, a 24-year old, beautiful soul with the strength of a ninja army. Her mom, Lesli, is a dear friend, and I've watched as family and friends, and friends of friends have come together to lift Jordan (and each other) during a terrifying ordeal.
On Friday, 9/2, Lesli was concerned because Jordan was really sick with a sinus infection. On Friday evening she was worse, so the plan was to go to the doctor on Saturday morning.
At 3 a.m., Jordan woke Lesli to tell her that she felt much worse. Lesli brought her a glass of water, and Jordan started throwing up blood.
Lesli rushed her to the hospital and by the time they got there, Jordan was unresponsive.
Within 12 hours, her infection was destroying her platelets and shutting down her organs. The doctors had never seen anyone go septic so quickly and weren't able to identify what or why. We were told there was no hope.
As the family and friends of Jordan stood over her telling her to fight, Lesli's friends gathered in the waiting room and prayed. And prayed. And even as private as Lesli is, we decided at that point it was time to get on Facebook and ask for everyone's prayers. This past week has been a testament to the power of prayer and positive thinking. THANK YOU!
Jordan is making progress and getting a little stronger each day. Please keep your prayers coming. She's not quite out of the woods, but the clearing is in sight. Her attacker was identified after 6 days as Fuso bacterium necrophorum, a very rare form of staph. So rare that none of the doctors had heard of it. She's still in CCU, and will likely be for a while. She's receiving kidney dialysis. There is question as to whether she will lose her legs/feet. As a friend who has only briefly spoken with a couple of doctors, and who gets most of her information secondhand, these are the best details I can offer.
Everyone has been asking what they can do. In addition to your prayers she now needs support of a more earthly kind. Of course, Jordan isn't able to work, and Lesli isn't working while Jordan's life is in jeopardy.
Jordan has no health insurance or savings. In addition to your prayers, she can really use help to offset expenses. No amount is too small. Just think if we all make even a small donation we can have a BIG impact. Let's do it.
Update: Jordan is awake! She removed her own breathing tube and started talking! She has no short term memory. She repeats the same questions over and over. She wants to know where she is, why she's there, when she can go home, and why she can't have a Dr. Pepper. :)
The prognosis on her legs looks better. However the prognosis on her feet isn't good at all. Please keep the prayers and positive thoughts coming for her feet. Also for her kidneys. She's receiving daily dialysis, which should be a temporary thing and her kidneys should start to work on their own again.
Her white blood count is finally starting to come down! Slooooooowly, but surely, Jordan is getting better and stronger. The doctors anticipate another week in CCU then, hopefully a regular room.
Thank you so much for your continued prayers, well wishes, and support!
9/12 Update:She's able to eat & drink a little! She got some Dr. Pepper! She's very awake & alert, and very confused. She sees what her body looks like and she doesn't like it. She can move both of her feet and the toes on her left foot but the doctors still can't find a pulse in either foot. The orthopedic surgeon visits sometime in the next couple of days. Please keep the prayers and positive thoughts coming. We continue to witness miracles and hold on to hope!
Following the Orthopedic surgeon's visit, he believes Jordan will lose her toes, and he's unsure if she will lose her feet/legs. However, we still believe in miracles!
Jordan is VERY confused. She's maintained most of her long-term memory but there are gaps. She doesn't know the year or her age. She doesn't remember where she lives or where she last worked. And her short term memory is still shot, so she's pretty much scared all of the time.
Thankfully she has AMAZING family and friends who are by her side every minute that the doctors allow.
9/13 Update from Cheryl Griffin, Jordan's stepmom:
"Much more quiet today while I was there, fever up a bit, the oxygen mask is back on. She's more thirsty than hungry, a little worried (understandably). She's talking to us, sleeping much better today from what I could tell...told me to tell the kids to make their pics bigger this time so she can see them from the bed. Please keep the thoughts/prayers headed her way when you can. She is one sick little girl and I'm humbled by her strength."
9/15 Update:
Jordan is having extremely important blood work tomorrow morning. Please pray, pray, pray for excellent results.
9/16 Update:
Her blood work is improved! However, due to loss of circulation during the initial days of crisis, her skin isn't well so her doctor wants to move her to a burn unit. Burn Unit options are locally at Arkansas Children's Hospital or sending her to Memphis. Praying that there's an opening at ACH.
I just heard...she's on her way to Children's! I'm so humbled by all of the love and support being shown to Jordan and her family. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Please keep those prayers/positive thoughts and healing energy coming!
Evening Update: Jordan is settled in at Children's. Justin Acri's friend, Jeff Holt stopped by to check on her. He's a SWAT team member, and he brought Jordan a SWAT Team Warrior Patch. They are warriors and consider her to be one too!
Jordan is in good spirits and everyone likes the atmosphere at ACH.
9/17 Update:
Jordan is currently undergoing a full evaluation at ACH.
9/18 Update:
Jordan's lab work is good! Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. She's looking at a long road to recovery with many baby steps to the end. Please, please keep Jordan and her family in your prayers during this very difficult time.
9/19 Update:
Jordan's surgery began at 2:30pm, following dialysis.
Jordan made it through surgery. Please keep Jordan and her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers.
9/20 Update taken from Jordan's stepmom, Cheryl's page:"My new plan, enjoy every single moment I have like today. She was alert, feeling very comfy (she's "loving this bed and may stay in these blankets for ever"), being quite sassy with the male nurse, singing, and perfectly okay with the fact that we're laughing at her for wanting the french fry/spaghetti noodle/popsicle stick out of her nose now (because "I am pretty funny".) Live for those moments right now."
9/21 Update:
Jordan is having a good day. One day at a time. And every day we're grateful for your prayers and support!
9/22 Update:
Today is going to be a sleepy day for Jordan. She will be sedated some of the day to clean and change her bandages. The doctors will be evaluating her progress from her last procedures to decide if more will be needed.
Doctor says no surgery tomorrow! She has a week to heal and rest some more before they start any other procedures.
9/25:
Jordan is looking at 2 more months of invasive procedures. Being in the CCU at Children's Hospital is the best place for her to be.
Please, please keep Jordan and her family and friends in your prayers.
Lesli is looking for a one-level 4br/3ba house in LR that can be made handicap accessible.
9/26:
Jordan will be sedated for most of the day so they can clean and change her bandages. She'll also have an MRI just as a precautionary measure.
9/27:
Still waiting on MRI results. Jordan's vitals are good and she's resting.
9/28:
It sounds like Jordan is being sassy today. :)
Her nurse said they may move her to a room with a window to help regulate her sleeping patterns, and possibly take her dialysis to a couple of hours a day instead of all day. Her vitals remain good. Bandage change tomorrow. All good news. As always, we're so grateful for your supports and prayers!
9/29:
Jordan's doctor was able to pinpoint the cause of her mental status on her MRI. He's hopeful that because she's young, she'll improve with physical and memory therapy.
For now she'll be staying on continual dialysis, but this should be temporary.
Please keep prayers, healing thoughts, and support coming for Jordan, her family, and her friends. She has an amazing support group who are by her side day and night.
10/1:
Jordan will be sedated again today for deep sedation and bandage changes.
10/2:
Jordan has a bit of a fever and her white blood cell count is elevated. Please send strong prayers and positive energy. Afternoon update: The nurse's report says that there may not be a secondary infection starting up. Instead Jordans body is showing a normal reaction to the areas of dead tissue that we already knew needed to be excised. Tomorrow, we will be getting the schedule for the next steps.
10/3:
Today's meeting reflects Jordan's continued recovery. She will be undergoing more surgery on Friday or early next week on her legs. Her other wounds are actually showing signs that they are healing so the doctors will be allowing another 6 to 8 weeks that process to continue.
10/4:
Surgery on Jordan's legs is scheduled for Friday. She's off dialysis today and will likely stay off until Thursday. She'll be sedated this morning to clean her wounds. Although her doctors are concerned that she may not regain her short term memory, both Kelly and Lesli have seen improvement and continue to believe that she'll recover it in time. Thank you for your continued prayers!
10/5:
Jordan's kidneys are showing strong signs of improvement! She remains off of dialysis for now.
In true Jordan style, she removed her own feeding tube overnight Monday. Her doctors say that as long as she continues to eat, the tube can stay out. Her family and friends are overwhelmed by the support, prayers, and positive wishes. Please keep them coming!
She did receive dialysis this afternoon and will continue to, likely 3 times a week.
10/6:
Jordan is moving to a room with a window! They'll now allow a family member to stay overnight in her room with her.
Her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow to have more of her legs amputated. We'll continue to be in a state of perpetual prayer.
Jordan got to work with physical therapists for the 1st time today. They moved her from her bed to a chair so she can get her neck and stomach muscles working.
Evening update: Doctors have let the family know there will be no surgery tomorrow. *2 thumbs way up*
10/7:
Jordan had her sedation bath this morning and her dialysis. Dialysis is now scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Her feeding tube is back in so that they can better regulate her nutrition. As of right now, the doctors are saying they don't think they'll have to do any further amputation on Jordan's legs!
10/9:
Jordan had her sedation cleaning and more physical therapy yesterday.
All signs point to another good day today.
Dr. K says there will be good days and bad days but she is MAKING PROGRESS. As always, we are grateful to everyone who's taking the time to follow her story and keep her and her family in your prayers.
Afternoon update: Jordan has an infection and is being treated with antibiotics. They've sent labs out to make sure there's nothing beyond the known infection. This is causing her fever to go up and down and she's very tired.
10/10:
Jordan had dialysis and physical therapy today. She sat up for over an hour and did some mini sit-ups. All in all, a good day.
10/12:
There's a possibility that Jordan will come off of dialysis completely!
10/13:
Jordan continues to be on antibiotics to fight her current bacterial infection.
On Monday, she will have surgery on her legs. Her skin is the focus of the surgery.
Thank you so much to everyone who is surrounding Jordan and her family and friends with love, support, and prayers.
10/14:
Happy news...Jordan didn't require dialysis today! Her kidneys are much improved!
Not so happy news...She pulled her feeding tube out again. She will have to have it reinserted. She is NOT a fan of the feeding tube.
Monday's surgery is more exploratory than anything else. They'll be taking a good look at her skin and likely removing dead tissue.
10/17:
Jordan is scheduled for dialysis today, and surgery at 1:00. Please pray that the doctors come out with GOOD NEWS!!
Surgery has been rescheduled for this morning.
10:30am: Jordan is out of surgery and it went better than expected! She's in recovery.
Amanda says that Jordan is talking really well and actually remembers some stuff! Good day!
10/18:
It sounds like Jordan is having another good day. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your prayers and positive thoughts and support. Update from Kelly, Jordan's dad: "The kidney doctor doesn't have to see Jordan anymore, her kidneys are back to normal. She is off her renal diet and currently eating a double cheeseburger. Bladow!" YES!
10/20:
Update from Lesli:
"Jordan continues progress. Today they do the deep sedation bandage change. If everything looks like her doctor expects, Jordan will come off antibiotics on Friday & early next week we will be able to take her on a daily spin around the hospital in a wheel chair. He says this is the slow part where his updates are just that she's progressing but it's slow. I'm cool with that:)"
Evening update: Jordan was running a fever of 103, likely due to her sedation, but they're doing blood work just as a precautionary measure to make sure there's no infection.
10/21:
Jordan is off the antibiotics, and Dr. K says that next week Jordan will be able to get out around the hospital in a wheel chair!
10/22:
Jordan was running a fever again last night but the doctors believe it's all part of the process. She was able to get out of her room today! Ian wheeled her around in a wheelchair!
10/27:
Jordan continues to do her physical therapy to strengthen her lungs, in addition to her daily breathing treatment.
She's eating solid foods but will remain on the feeding tube for an extended period of time since a large majority of her body is covered in wounds and she requires additional nutrition to heal.
She ran a fever again yesterday so cultures and blood work are being run as a precaution. She's better today.
She still has no short term memory. We're waiting now to find out what the next step is.
Even though the updates are less often, please please keep Jordan and her family/friends in your prayers.
10/28:
Jordan now has a therapist working with her to help recover her short-term memory.
Tomorrow, Jordan will have deep sedation cleaning. On Monday, her skin doctor will inspect her wounds to see if the wound vac has been working as anticipated. If it has, they plan to start skin grafting in a week or so.
If all goes as planned, Jordan could be looking at moving to rehab within a couple of months. We desperately want to get her into Baptist Rehab. Please pray for positive results with her skin and that she'll be able to get into Baptist Rehab.
11/1:
It does look like Jordan will be able to go to Baptist Rehab. The people at ACH and Baptist are in contact and the wheels are in motion. No word yet on when the skin grafting will begin, hopefully next week.
11/3:
Jordan's doctor says her skin looks good and he'll be talking to the family soon about skin donors and grafts!
Regarding Jordan's short-term memory, there are days when there is a spark of improvement, giving everyone reason to believe that she will eventually be able to regain her full brain function. For now, she still has no real short -term memory.
11/4:
Skin grafting will start next Friday. Doctors estimate that Jordan will be in Baptist Rehab by mid December. We are eternally grateful for the continued show of support, and for all of your prayers for Jordan and her friends and family. Thank you!!
11/5:
When Nurse Tiffany asked Jordan who was coming to see her this morning, she knew Lesli was coming, AND she remembered something Lesli has been telling her every time she sees her! A memory!
She was also strong enough to brush her own teeth! Saturday was a very good day!
11/7:
Jordan had deep sedation wound cleaning today. These are tough days for her, so the focus tonight is on managing her pain.
11/9:
Jordan is becoming more aware of the fact that her legs are gone and she's going through a lot of sadness and grieving right now. Her memory is still gone but she's grasping how sick she really is.
She's very weak but she's gaining more strength. She's becoming strong enough to feed herself.
The power of prayer has been an astonishing, uplifting force throughout this whole tragic experience, and we're so humbled by all of the support of friends, and even strangers. Thank you so much!!!
11/10:
Jordan did great in her physical therapy yesterday! Lesli and Amanda wheeled her all around the hospital and she even got to go outside for the first time in over 2 months!! She had a wonderful day!!
11/11: 7:30pm
Jordan's skin grafting procedure was tonight. She has about 30 more minutes to go and then she's in recovery. All went well. Dr. K had to remove another 1-1 1/2 inches from her right leg, which wasn't unexpected and she said it won't make a noticeable difference.
Watching the way Lesli and Kelly are taking such amazing care of Jordan, always there for her, never wavering, I know where she gets her strength.
11/12: 12:30pm
Jordan is having a good day so far. She called Lesli at 6 and they had breakfast together.
In the procedure yesterday, Jordan was given donor skin. They'll look at it on Wednesday, and it it looks good, they'll replace it with her own skin on Friday.
There's also a possibility that, instead of going to Baptist Rehab, she may go to a neurological rehab center.
Let me just say how touched I am by the wonderful messages of support I'm getting for Jordan and her family. Thank you so much for your prayers!! They're working!!
11/20:
According to her neurologist, Jordan has made enough progress that she WILL be able to go from Children's to Baptist Rehab! She's making slow, but sure progress with her memory.
The surgery to replace her donor skin with her own skin is scheduled for Tuesday.
As ever, thank you, thank you, thank you for your prayers and support!!
11/21:
Jordan's is scheduled to go to Baptist Rehab on December 1st!
11/24:
Happy Thanksgiving! Jordan requested green bean bundles, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes, so Lesli cooked her her exactly what she wanted and they had Thanksgiving breakfast! We have SO much to be thankful for!!
11/27:
Excellent news! 99% of Jordan's skin grafts took!!!! She can start prosthetics training in one month!! And she gets her feeding tube out TODAY!!!!
11/30:
It looks like Jordan will be going to Baptist Rehab next week!
12/4:
Jordan is able to write! The photo at the top of the page was taken today! I just want to reach out and say thank you once again to everyone who continues to follow Jordan's progress and support her with your prayers and positive energy!!
12/9:
Jordan was scheduled to go to Baptist Rehab today, but due to a small hiccup, her moving date has been moved to Monday. No worries! Jordan WILL be at Baptist Rehab on Monday!
UPDATE:
Jordan is headed to Baptist Rehab now!
12/11:
And now the hard part begins. Jordan's strength never ceases to amaze and inspire. Please keep your prayers and positive thoughts coming as she learns to face the challenges of her new life.
12/14 update from Lesli's Facebook:Jordan Nicole Griffin is making progress EVERY DAY! She can't WAIT to get home and looks forward to being able to WALK. Also, BRI has found someone that went through the same thing Jordan did and they're going to come in and discuss the experience. She says it's really hard and she's really sad, but that she coming to terms with it more every day. How awesome is that? very
12/18:
Jordan is doing great at Baptist Rehab. She continues to amaze. All signs point to her coming home for Christmas!
Lesli found a one-level house and closed on it last week. Home Depot will be putting in ramps this week. Everything is happening so fast!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your support and prayers!
12/22:
Jordan comes home tomorrow!!!!!
12/25:
Jordan is celebrating Christmas at home with her family today!
She's making a little more progress every day. Jordan, you're a freaking rock star!
1/1/2012:
i got to see Jordan last night for the 1st time since she came home. She looks amazing. She's got a long road to recovery but her sheer determination, sense of humor, and great attitude are inspiring beyond words.
To think that just 4 months ago, she just had "strep throat".
She's working with home health care and continuing to improve her strength. Soon, she'll start working with prosthetic legs!
And her memory, while still patchy, continues to improve.
Please continue to keep Jordan and her family and friends in your prayers. Her recovery has been nothing less than miraculous, and we're so grateful for your overwhelming support.
1/12/12:
I got to see Jordan again last night. Mae, her bestie from Indiana was in town and we sang karaoke at the house. Jordan looks beautiful!
Jordan continues to work on her strength and continues to show improvement. She's getting closer and closer to being able to work with prosthetic legs.
Jordan and those closest to her have shown such strength through this ordeal. I see them fighting through the frustration and pain. Please, please continue to pray and send positive energy their way. Thank you to everyone for every single thing you've done to help!!!
1/18/12:
Jordan got out of bed and into her wheelchair by herself this morning!! And awaaaaay she goes!!
She'll start training with prosthetic legs in 2 weeks!
Thank you for your continued support and prayers!
1/20/12:
Lesli got a call from Arkansas Children's Hospital tonight. Because of the rarity of the bacteria that attacked Jordan, they want to publish a paper about her ordeal. Of course, she said yes.
2/5/12:
Jordan was fitted for prosthetic legs last week. In the meantime, she's able to get in and out of her wheelchair on her own, and get around all on her own!
They're still waiting for Medicaid to come through. Things should move along a lot more quickly once that happens.
Jordan continues to amaze! Please keep your prayers coming...and thank you!!!
2/23/12:
Jordan had a check up visit at Children's today.
According to Lesli:
"Jordan's Drs @ ACH were excited to see her. They said it was like Christmas:). We're about to head up to the burn unit to visit some of the best nurses in the whole wide world:). Also, Dr Khandelwalt didn't make any promises but it's always possible they might name what happened to her after her:)"
Jordan is still waiting for prosthetics training. She has another consultation next Tuesday, so hopefully more exciting news after that!
Please keep your prayers/posi thoughts coming. While Jordan's brain function continues to improve, she's still working on her short term memory.
Thank you!!
2/24
Slightly more info from yesterday's appointment...
Dr. K said that he's never seen so much necrotic tissue on anyone as Jordan had when she arrived at Children's. He absolutely didn't expect her to make it.
They are shocked at how fast and well her skin is healing!!!
2/28
According to Caleb with New Hope Prosthetics, they'll cast for Jordan's starter legs in 2 weeks and expect her to be standing in about a month!!!!
GO JORDAN!!!!!
4/5
As it turns out, things have progressed more slowly than we'd hoped but today is the day!! Jordan gets her starter legs today at 2:00 and starts her prosthetic training! Please send posi vibes and prayers!!
4/9
From Lesli:
Today, Jordan's dad, Kelly Griffin (with his friend TJ), is going to install ramps in the house!!! And Caleb with New Hope Prosthetics is going to install a set of parallel bars for Jordan to work out on!!!! Progress, I tell ya, PROGRESS! And THANKS!!!!!
4/18
Yesterday, Jordan took her first steps in over 7 months! I got to see a video of it and it was overwhelming! She's amazing. Go Jordan! There's much work to do so please send her your prayers and positive vibes. Thank you!!
5/1
Lesli updated Jordan's first doctor, Dr. Makul on Jordan. Following is her response:
Thank you so much for the update, it means the world to me. As I remember the days and nights when Jordan was fighting for her life and while the memories of her youthful and beautiful face and your immense hope and anguish flitted in front of my eyes, I realized that what saved her life is courage and love before anything else. Her courage and your love gave our team the necessary determination to continue the fight and we are today rewarded by her triumph over disease and death. Her story has been an inspiration to all of us. My sincere affection to Jordan and to all of you.
I don't know what we all would have done without Dr. Makul at Baptist. She was the calm in the storm on many many occasions and I personally will be forever grateful to her for everything she did for Jordan and for her family.
We're sending a huge THANK YOU to Samantha Walker at Downtown Music for throwing Jordan a most spectacular fundraising benefit show!! It was a huge success, and a chance for family and friends to come together and HAVE SOME FUN! THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who gave of their time and resources...the staff at DTM, all of the local bands, including Fallen Empire, WishTribe, Amore, God City Destroyers, and Mainland Divide.
And I definitely need to find out who made the awesome "Team Jordan" t-shirts and donated them. We love you!! Proceeds from the sale of the shirts all went to Jordan. Just found out that Jeremy Baker donated the time and Samantha bought the shirts.
And another huge thanks to Tina at 100.3 The Edge for helping to promote the fundraiser and for the awesome raffle items! We can't thank you all enough for your generosity!
An overwhelming THANK YOU to Al at The Butcher Shop for throwing a huge benefit for Jordan this morning!
